In this day and age it’s so easy to film anything we want, but we have a different approach: to stop and listen first.
Use your camera just an extension of yourself, don’t “steal” information, use it to save something important, something people choose to share with you.

How do we make the right choice?
Under the saturation of information we live in we often feel frustrated, not knowing what’s the right thing to choose, or even worst, not knowing what to do. That feeling of being stuck on something it’s awful. It’s where our mind gets overloaded by too many inputs and crashed not knowing what do.
The problem is that we were trained by our society do to more and more, to go over, because there’s no limit.
Not having that limit might be good for capitalism but not much for our brain, as that means not knowing when to stop, when is enough and that translate into not knowing what to choose.

We interviewed Fabio at Meraki, an eco village based on self-growth and harmony with others. It’s situated along the Italian famous pilgrimage: La Via Degli Dei. It’s no coincidence that the ecovillage it was founded by travellers.

This week (starting now) the summer retreats RIVE (Italian community of eco villages) takes place at Meraki. We will be there to project our films.
It’s gonna be great. Can’t wait to share more with you.

Finding a sustainable way of living is the way to go. 🕺
It’s what we should look at.
It’s how to improve.
But how we can do it in an over controlled world as the one we live in? 🌍

Every time we try to do things our way society strikes in stopping our good intentions.
It seems that to be truly independent we have to be anarchists. 🦹🏻‍♀️
But the battle we are fighting is a personal one: we are playing with our own existence.
The only (but powerful) choice we have is how much we want to rely on big corporations to live a good life. 🏗️

Take energy for example.
Energy is so expensive that we are worried to switch on the central heating for its consumption. ⚡️💥
But this uncomfortable feeling of dependency on something we can’t control HAS TO CHANGE.
We can get our energy freedom and be more independent by building a solar collector by ourselves for example. 🌞

“Free Energy -Bringing awareness” shown us how to do it with mostly recycled materials such as wooden boards, place together to make a box, tubes, insulating material, mirrors and glasses. They had to buy a little solar panel to make the fun going and some fixing materials as black spray can (to attract more heat inside the box) and gaskets to help with insulation. 🍃

Who said we can’t live without paying bills?
Bills are just a form of controlling our life so we keep working (often in a job we don’t like) just because we are too scared of living off the grid. Or in other words: independently from the system. But the real problem is only the state of comfort we got stuck in.
This idea of comfort has converted desiredes into needs. Because now we think we can’t survive without comfort.
How can we even live without electricity?
We have recently shown you how the guys from Bilous farm (see previous posts) live in harmony without electricity. As long as a strong sense of community is present we can overcome any obstacle.

But how can we cook our food without electricity or gas?
Mickael and Florian from Roulopa don’t seem to be discouraged by that. In fact as long as the sun is up they can cook a full meal just using the power of the sun.
We are not talking about using solar panels to collect electricity that can be used to power a stove, but simply cooking by converting the reflection of sun’s rays to a pot.
Mickael and Florian live a beautiful life because they managed to quit the illusory state of comfort that forces us to be connected to the grid. They live on a gipsy wagon simply pulled by horses. Basically they move their house without petrol or electricity, it’s pure horse-power. They cook, wash, travel and rest with a rhyme that is more in tune with nature.

For him friendship is sharing a common goal.
But also living close by.
At the farm they invest time and energy into knowing their neighbours, sharing food and utilities. They say the revolution towards a better world starts there: at your doorstep.

In this day and age that’s not so common to us. We connect to the other side of the world in the name of communities we only join because we think “they’re cool”. But we (at least most of us) lost touch with the ground, with our real needs.
That’s why what Antonie and his friends are doing at the farm is so important.
Because they are putting values and real needs upfront. So all the rest become secondary: like money for example.
We only need money to buy things to cover our needs but if we can cover our needs by only sharing stuff with our neighbours what money are used for? 💰

In the same way we got used to having electricity and now thinking of living without it seems impossible.

Perhaps thinking of our daily routine without electricity seems impossible but by looking at what a group of 24 year olds have done we can be inspired for a change, however small, in our electricity consumption.

They put some money together and bought a piece of land in Normandy.
There they started to follow their principles of sustainability and self sufficiency. They grow their own food and exchange the surplus with what the neighbours have to offer. They don’t use cars or any other vehicles that burn fossil fuels. They go to places with their bicycles. They don’t watch tv, they cycle to the next village to watch a movie in the local cinema instead.

What does it means to explore the world in this day and age?
We asked it to Maurizio Doro, long time extreme adventure traveller. 🍀

We have so much technology that we trust more that than our instincts. 📲
As a result we no more know where to go if a GPS is not pointing to a certain direction.
We don’t know how to survive without tech equipment such as high performative tents, bicycles and clothes.
But real travellers don’t think about stuff. They focus on one thing and one thing only: to continue the journey with what they already have.
To continue straight on, go over that mountain, that river, that lake. No matter what.

The best adventure is where creativity takes over, and not where everything is already planned.
🧚🏻‍♂️
So what EXPLORING truly means to you?
What kind of energies are involved in this process?
🌏
For us this is pretty much the spirit we follow when meeting someone we want to interview.
We want to see where the path they have found in life leads.
But when everything is already explored it also means that life is already defined and we have no more freedom to look for a path, to find a new way of doing things.
We follow the GPS track to a destination that might be quicker to reach but doesn’t make us think. We are not experiencing.
We are missing out life.

Maurizio Doro started his adventures in a world where gps and the kind of planning we have today was only a dream. He crossed deserts, frozen lakes and climbed mountains all over the world.
His solo expeditions were something more than just travels. He looked for the wildest thing to do, always wild camping to be close to nature, as far as possible from civilisation.
That’s the true meaning of exploring: discovering what’s different and accept it.

In this video Maurizio talks about his travel to Alaska. He planned to do a very difficult crossing that turns out impossible to complete, so he had to call the U.S. coast guard who picked him up with an elicopter.
During this adventure he didn’t find any shops, so he had to have all the food with him or find in nature (not much considering it was Alaska). He slept on a tent that was nothing much more than a sheet. He cycled and use a dinghy to cross the section on the ocean.

We spend most of our time worrying about something

We spend most of our time worrying about something that will probably never happen.
We run here and there just to fix things but we aren’t really accomplishing anything new.
We like to keep our minds busy with things to do though, often finding solutions to problems we created just the night before.

It feels like we are trapped in an our heads, constantly reviewing the same speech, reading it aloud in the hope others will agree to it too.

But if we stop for a minute and look at everything we do from a bigger perspective we see how limited our thoughts are.
We can only judge and define what we already know.
When we will stop playing God and acknowledging we actually don’t know everything?

A place for nomads to stay.
This might sound like a contradiction but nomads need safe places to stay for a while more than anybody else.

Artgloyde was built inside caves, these rocks were easy to break due to the soft surface. So many could have their own privacy while sharing communal living spaces with others.
These days this village attract many people from artists to travellers. What they all have in common are good vibes and respect for others: everyone is free to live as they like but they have to let others live freely too.

Un luogo per i nomadi dove potersi fermare.
Questa può sembrare una contraddizione ma in realtà i nomadi hanno bisogno di luoghi sicuri dove stare per un po’ di tempo più di chiunque altro.

Artgloyde è stato costruito nelle caverne, queste rocce erano facili da rompere per via della soffice superficie. Così molti hanno potuto avere la loro privacy pur condividendo gli spazi comuni con altri.
Ora questo villaggio attrae diversi tipi di persone da artisti a viaggiatori. Quello che tutti hanno in comune sono le good vibes e il rispetto per gli altri: tutti sono liberi di vivere liberamente ma devono lasciar spazio anche agli altri di sentirsi egualmente liberi.

When in France we visited an ecovillage like no others. It was the mix of people that got us first. Mostly artists (you could learn how to make sculptures) but also street jugglers, farmers, musicians.
It was hard to connect to people in a way that would allow us to film without shame. It took a while to feel accepted with our cameras but as people we felt welcomed since the first hour we spent there.
Our filmmaker @luis_wabi is going to publish a video soon about this: how to connect to the right people and having access to stories and locations.

In this interview we asked one of the owner of the land what’s his purpose of life.

In Francia abbiamo visitato un ecovillaggio come nessun altro.
È stata la varietà di persone a colpirci per prima cosa.
La comunità è abitata principalmente da artisti (si insegna anche a realizzare sculture di pietra) ma anche giocolieri, contadini, musicisti.
È stato difficile farci accettare in modo da poter filmare senza vergogna. Ci è voluto un po’ perché le nostre videocamere potessero girare senza infastidire nessuno ma in qualità di individui ci hanno accettato fin dal primo momento.

The globalisation came aggressively in our lives destroyed differences, the uniqueness of individuals.
Nowadays around every main square of a big city we find the same shops, and so the same way of exploring the same city, to reach it with the same transports. We are leaving behind the pleasure of exploring and learning something new because of comfort.

In his words:
“I figure we have about 25 years before this information will be completely assimilated into the encroaching consumer society, the levelling of values that seems now to be an inevitable part of the globalizing of society. On one level, it’s very good when we recognize ourselves in our enemies, and there’s a commonality of values generated. But on another level, it’s tremendously destructive of novelty and uniqueness.
I mean, we’re turning the whole planet into a white bread mall, shopping culture and the values of every other way of doing things is being subsumed to that.”
